Junior update: Allen DE Chris Smith

Continuing the recent DE/DT theme, IT brings you another report on Chris Smith from Allen. Smith has some scholarship news; the word on his ability has certainly spread. We also grabbed more vital info from the standout defender.

Unable to get Smith's stats from the Allen coaches when we first profiled the takedown artist, we got Smith to give us a rough idea.

"I had about 60 tackles, 20 TFLs, 16 sacks, 12 pressures, 4 tipped passes, 5 forced fumbles and 1 fumble recovery," Smith said.

In our last Chris Smith junior report, IT had Smith with a 300 bench, 450 squat, 305 power clean, 285 incline bench.

Smith said the 305-pound power clean was actually a 305-pound hang clean. Also said that his bench is up to 320 and that his incline is now at 295.

Also in our last report, IT discovered that Smith, a projected DE, will be asked to move to an interior line spot.

Asked if any colleges are looking at him as a DT, Smith said, "Not really...every school that has offered and recruited me has only mentioned playing me as a DE. And that's where I want to play in college."

The highly regarded prep from Allen claims several offers. The number of schools who've stepped up to the plate are as follows: "LSU, OU, Iowa, Texas, Texas Tech, K-State and SMU."

As for what he's working on to improve his skills, Smith told IT, "I'm just working out a lot. I'm trying to get up to 260-265-pounds and I'd like to get my forty time down to the 4.7-range. And if I work hard enough, I think I could even get it to a high 4.6 one day."

"But the forty time isn't what I really need to improve," added Smith, who obviously knows the difference between football speed and forty time-speed. "But I'm working on my quickness and just trying to improve my footwork. That's where I know I can make myself even better. And I think if I do that, I'll improve my forty time too."

Camp agenda?

"I'll be going to the Nike camp," Smith told IT. "And I'd like to make the OU, A&M and Texas one-day camps."

Smith has a top 8 right now: Texas, A&M, OU, Texas Tech, SMU, K-State, LSU, Iowa.

We'll have his decision timeframe and comments on the schools above in this week's installment of the Inside Scoop.
