Texas releases non-con basketball schedule

Texas Forward Gary Johnson

Give the Texas men's basketball staff credit: They wanted the Longhorns, who lost three players to the top 32 picks in the NBA Draft, to be battle-tested in the non-conference schedule. That kind of experience would likely be necessary before heading into what should be a strong season for Big 12 basketball teams.

Non-Con schedules often include a test or two, but Texas's slate includes four troublesome teams, including back-to-back road games at North Carolina and at Michigan State just before Christmas. After New Year's, the Longhorns face two other tough games in feisty Arkansas, which is 1-1 against the Longhorns in their last two meetings, and a home matchup with Connecticut as Texas's last game before conference play

And none of that counts the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic, where the Longhorns could be matched up with two of the following three teams: Illinois, Pittsburgh and Maryland. Texas will also face a probation-ravaged USC squad in the Big 12/Pac-10 Hardwood Challenge. USC went 16-14 last year.
