The Texas Longhorns checked in today for fall camp and all roster players were accounted for, including freshman defensive tackle Derek Johnson who had left during the summer to return to Hoxie, Arkansas to attend to personal matters.
Head Coach Mack Brown announced today that everyone had checked in on time,
“Everybody came back at a record pace this morning. We asked them to check-in between 10:30 and 12 and I think everyone was here in line at 10:30. Everybody is back,” Coach Brown said this afternoon.
The team did announce that two players, junior tight end Josh Marshall and sophomore defensive tackle Michael Wilcoxon, have decided to give up their football careers due to injuries.
“I’ve been dealing with a shoulder injury for a while, and unfortunately, it just isn’t healing right,” Marshall said. Marshall appeared in seven games as a back-up tight end and on special teams in 2007, but missed the 2008 season with shoulder surgery.
“I’m really disappointed that I’m not going to be able to be out there with the guys playing, but I’ve been dealing with some chronic medical issues that have prevented me from doing that. I’ve really enjoyed my time over the past two seasons,” said Wilcoxon, who appeared in six games at defensive tackle and on special teams in 2008.
Other than those two medical issues, every player has been cleared for practice by the medical staff. The team will meet tonight at 6:15 p.m. for a team meeting before tomorrow’s first practice at 6:30 a.m. The first two days of practice will be in shorts and t-shirts while days three and four will be in shells. The fifth day of practice will be the first in full pads. By NCAA rule during the first five days of camp, each player can also practice once.
During those five days, the team will be split into two groups where one group practices in the morning and the other in the evening so each group gets more repetitions but is still in compliance with the rule. The non-practicing group will watch the other group perform.
The team will break camp at the end of August to enter game week preparation for opening week versus Louisiana Monroe on September 5 at 6 p.m.
