The Texas state track meet in Austin this weekend showcases some tremendous football talent from the 2009, 2010, and 2011 recruiting classes. Some events sound like a who’s who’s under Friday night’s lights. Take a look at some of the most intriguing match-ups.

The University Interscholastic League is hosting its annual state track meet in Austin this weekend and for most contestants it is better late than never. The meet was originally slated to occur on May 15 and 16, but when the UIL suspended all athletic competitions due to the swine flu scare, the event was postponed for about three weeks.

As is the case in most years, some of the state’s top talent on the football field also show up at the state track meet. This season is no different many names litter the qualifying sheet that usually light up the scoreboards on Friday nights.

Texas Longhorn Commitments

The Texas Longhorns are well represented by a couple of small school dynamos in Cayuga’s Traylon Shead and Daingerfield’s Chris Jones. Both are verbal commitments in the 2010 class. Shead will run in the 1A 100-meter dash on Saturday at 1:15. Jones already placed third in the 2A long jump with a jump of 22 feet and three and three-quarter inches. Jones is also a part of Daingerfield’s 4 x 200 relay team.

Additionally, Texas track signee and possible Longhorn football walk-on Marquise Goodwin has qualified for five events for the second year in a row. Goodwin from Rowlett starts his Saturday with the long jump, followed by the triple jump, the 400-meter relay, 100-meter dash, and then closes out his day with the 200-meter. Goodwin is the favorite to win all five events.

Football Prospects

The 5A 200-meter dash will be one of the flashiest events of Saturday’s slate as North Shore’s 2010 wide receiver DeAndrew White and Fort Bend Dulles’s 2011 cornerback Sheroid Evans both try to take down Goodwin. White will also compete in the long jump against Goodwin. Evans is a threat in the individual 400-meter race.

West Orange Stark two-way 2010 athlete Trey Franks may not have as many events as Goodwin, but he just might be busier, at least for 65 minutes. From 12:10 to 1:15 on Saturday, Franks will run the 3A 100-meter dash and as part of the Mustang 400-meter and 800-meter relay teams. James Haynes, another 2010 safety prospect, also runs on both relay teams and will compete in the 3A long jump.

Four other 2011 prospects will compete on Saturday as well including San Antonio Madison’s Aaron Green in the 5A 110-meter hurdles, Angleton’s Quandre Diggs as part of the 400-meter relay, Abilene’s Herschel Sims as part of the 800-meter relay, and Trinity’s Tevin Williams in the 5A triple jump.

Lancaster defensive back Tyler Stephenson (2010 class) finished fourth in the 4A 110-meter hurdles with a time 13.95 and will compete in the 300-meter hurdles.
