Catching Up with Trey Graham

Catching Up with Trey Graham

The Texas Longhorns signed a very good recruiting class in February, including two tight ends in Trey Graham and Barrett Matthews. With a rash of injuries at that position, both might have the opportunity to contribute early in addition to defensive end/tight end Dominique Jones. Burnt Orange Beat spoke with Graham as he prepares for his freshman year.

Tight end Trey Graham of Waco Midway is diligently working to prepare for his freshman season at the University of Texas. In fact, Graham seems to diligently prepare for everything – his high school course load, his graduation, and even his mock interviews for his debate class. Last week when Burnt Orange Beat met with Graham, he had just finished his mock interviews while dressed in suit pants, shirt and tie.

"I think I nailed them," Graham said with a wry grin.

That level of work has paid off handsomely for Graham as he nears the end of his high school coursework. Graham will finish 25th in his class of 450 students. He is taking a full schedule this spring while working out with his father at 5:45 in the morning each day.

"I've been working out hard and running. Of course I got the workout from Texas since I signed so I have been doing that. My dad has been doing it with me. I am just trying to get ready to go," Graham explained.

Graham has added pounds this offseason to get back up to around 240 pounds on his 6 foot, 5 inch frame. Graham said he lost some weight during his senior season as is typical for most athletes.

Graham is just a couple of days away from moving down to Austin (May 30), but will return to Midway for his graduation ceremonies on June 4. Graham will room with freshman defensive lineman Kyle Kriegel who has been at Texas for the spring semester.

"He says it's tough. Yes, it is fun but there are lots of things to learn on your own. That's okay as I didn't expect it to be an easy ride," Graham noted.

Graham understands that he might have an opportunity to play early given the rash of injuries at the tight end spot.

"Personally, I want to learn the playbook and I hope it works out for me. And I just get in there and work as hard as I can and see where that puts me. I feel like I am dedicated enough and a hard enough worker that I can go out there and compete with anybody," Graham said.

"If I get the opportunity (to play), that will all depend on the summer workouts and practices. Hopefully I'll get a chance to contribute."

Graham knows if he does contribute it will be part of a special 2009 Texas team.

"I want to predict a national championship," Graham says proudly.
