One of the five defensive line commitments for the Texas Longhorns is Alief Taylor tackle De’Aires Cotton. The 6-3.5, 275-pound run stuffer committed to Texas on February 8 and was back on campus again on Saturday for the Longhorn’s closed scrimmage. Burnt Orange Beat spoke with Cotton on Sunday to discuss his trip.

The Texas Longhorns hosted members of the 2009 signing class, a number of 2010 commitments and a couple of the top junior prospects still uncommitted on Saturday in Austin. One of the 2010 commits on hand was defensive tackle De’Aires Cotton.

The trip to Austin for the four-star prospect was his first since committing on February 8 and he was very excited to return.

“I did go to Austin on Saturday,” said Cotton. “I made it, but was a little late getting there. We just went straight to the bubble for practice. All of the recruits were in one area and we watched practice and talked. After the practice, we went to a meeting room for a little while and talked.”

Of course, the day was a chance for the #180 prospect in the Scout 300 to get to know some his future Longhorn teammates. The 3-4 nose tackle said he had an opportunity to get re-acquainted with a number of commitments and one player that signed in February.

“I talked a long time with Taylor Bible. We exchanged numbers. We had a lot in common, hit it off and have a lot of chemistry already. We are already close. I talked to Colt McCoy’s brother for a while too. I talked to the linebacker from Garland. He’s a great guy. I met Jackson Jeffcoat too. He’s a great guy and I hope he comes to Texas. I also met the defensive end that just signed from Round Rock, Tevin Mims. It was exciting to meet all of them,” Cotton said.

Cotton, who considered offers from Oklahoma, Texas A&M, Nebraska and Oklahoma State before committing to Texas, said watching the action on Saturday got him pumped for spring practice that will begin in a couple of weeks.

“I was exciting just watching them go at it. I was ready to pad up and get after it. I’m ready to put the pads on and get going with spring practice now. We start in a couple of weeks and have our spring game on May 9th I think. We’ve just been working hard in the weight room, but now it’s time to put the pads on,” Cotton said.

Since committing to Texas, Cotton has made a point of staying on top of his academics as many prospects tend to rest and can see a slip.

“I’ve just been working out in the weight room and in off-season, but really I’ve been staying on top of my grades. I took my SAT recently and am just working hard to make sure my grades are right,” Cotton said.

The 2008 all-district pick said his recruitment has slowed down a lot since he committed to Texas as well as all the phone calls from the media.

“That’s been crazy (the change in attention). I haven’t been getting in calls from Scout, ESPN or Rivals or anything like that. I don’t really open up much mail or pay attention to recruiting anymore. I have a bunch of letters that I haven’t opened. I did open one up from Baylor and it said they were offering and wanted me to go there,” Cotton said.
