IT's Coaches Corner Moderator Mike Venable grades the Longhorn performances in Texas' win over Colorado.

The offense continued to put up big numbers despite being on the road and without a consistent ground game to take some of the pressure off the passing game. We dominated with the short passing game and received a career game from Chris Ogbonnaya in both phases of the offensive game plan. We are still a work in progress on the ground. We haven't been able to change the LOS with our O-Line still struggling with our reach blocking scheme. The RB committee hasn't fared well in this scheme with slashing one cut attempts. Drive blocking and downhill running don't seem to be in our plans so we better improve our sideways game soon as the schedule grows tougher.

It's fun watching this defense play the game. The intensity for this entire bunch buries the reduced busted assignments, missed tackles and bad angles that have dominated the past few UT defenses. The front seven are even knocking each other down in pursuit of the football. The back seven are making athletic plays on the football. The front four is blistering off blocks to provide constant pressure and batting down throws when they can't hurry the QB. The LB's are flying around with hostile on their mind and actually made a few plays against the passing game. The young DB's are still learning "come here" from "sic 'em" but they definitely aren't shy about causing some wrecks or throwing their bodies into the fray.

The Coaches Corner is available exclusively to InsideTexas.com subscribers. The forum is a place to ask questions of our resident coaches and talk about Xs and Os, schemes, gameplans, offensive and defensive theories, etc. Basically, it is a teaching and learning forum to make us all more knowledgeable football fans, both in general and specifically about the Longhorn football team. Venable spent 30 years as the DC and LB coach at five Texas high schools (Lancaster, Duncanville, Pasadena Sam Rayburn, Carrollton Turner, and The Colony) before retiring in 2000. Four of his former players played at UT (Mike Williams, Steve Massey, Jimmy Johnson, and Doug Livingston) and around twenty are currently coaching in Texas high schools.
