Texas started Big 12 play on Friday with a win, beating Kansas 8-6. The hero of the game for the Horns was Cameron Rupp. The freshman catcher knocked in five of the Horns' eight runs on three hits.
Austin Wood got the start for Texas, but Brandon Workman got the win. Wood left after two innings in which he had three runs scored against him. He was replaced by Workman, who gave up three runs of his own. But three runs in the bottom of the third and three runs in the bottom of the fifth gave the Longhorns the lead and made sure they held on for the win.
Game two was also a win for Texas and the pitchers got a chance to shine in this one. The Horns won the game 6-1 as Kenn Kasparek, Chance Ruffin and Stayon Thomas combined to give up only a single run on five hits and striking out 12 over nine innings.
Game three of the weekend series is Texas' only conference loss on the young season. The Horns had already taken the series, but Kansas got a measure of revenge, winning 7-2.
Heading into the 7th, the game was deadlocked at 2-2. But the Jayhawks put up four runs in the top half of the 7th and held on, escaping Austin with one win.
Texas travels to San Antonio on Monday for one game against UTSA at 6:00 p.m. and then returns to Austin for a Tuesday match-up against Texas State at 6:05 p.m.
The Longhorns' next conference series is in Lubbock against Texas Tech, starting on Thursday at 6:05 p.m.
