AMES, IA -- The Longhorns finally have a conference victory and they got it through the air,…
Upon Further Review...
First half, first down – not bad: Texas gained complete control of the game with an overwhelming first half. The Longhorns scored touchdowns on four of their five possessions of the first half and with three minutes remaining in the first half, two-thirds of the Longhorns' yards had come on first down alone. McCoy was 15 of 19 passing in the first half for 214 yards and three touchdowns. Texas' defense played a huge role in the first-half dominance as well, at one point holding the Cyclones to two consecutive three-and-outs in the second quarter.
The running game: Texas rushed for an impressive 216 yards, but the leading rusher was backup quarterback John Chiles, who gained 58 yards on nine carries. McCoy, ironically, was the second-leading rusher with 55 yards (44 of which came on a touchdown scamper). Jamaal Charles carried just seven times for 44 yards in the game; seven different players had carries in the blowout.
Jamaal's numbers: Charles – who scored on an eight-yard run with 5:31 left to play in the second quarter – did not fumble in the ballgame. His season stats are now 126 carries for 666 (no!) yards and eight touchdowns. His career numbers are 401 carries for 2,375 yards.
Charting McCoy: McCoy recorded the best game of his season, completing 23-of-30 passes for 298 yards and four touchdowns. He also scored on a winding, 44-yard touchdown run late in the third period. McCoy's most impressive play might have come early in the third quarter when, under duress, he spun free of a tackle and narrowly missed being sacked before scrambling away to hit a wide-open Nate Jones in the end zone for a 20-yard touchdown. McCoy's season totals are now 160-of-242 (66 percent) for 1,875 yards, 14 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.
Cosby show: Receiver Quan Cosby has now had a reception in 25 consecutive games. He caught five passes for 46 yards and a touchdown, so his totals this year are 37 catches for 329 yards and three touchdowns. He's closing in on the century mark in receptions for his career: he stands at 96 catches for 1,124 yards and seven touchdowns.
Keeping up with Jones: Jones had the most impressive numbers in Limas Sweed's absence, catching seven passes for 125 yards and a touchdown. His season numbers are now 43 catches for 480 yards and three touchdowns.
Shipley numbers: Shipley was highly efficient, with three catches for 71 yards. Two of his catches went for touchdowns.
The series: Texas leads the series with Iowa State 7-0.
Charting Chiles: Backup quarterback John Chiles saw the most action of his career and led the team in rushing with nine carries for 58 yards, including an 11-yard touchdown. Chiles did not complete either his one pass attempt.
Kicking it easy: Kicker Ryan Bailey has now kicked 39 consecutive successful extra points. He's made 10 of 12 field goals this season.
Todd Blythe: The Iowa State receiver needed 8 receptions to pass Lane Danielsen on the career reception list (163, 2000-03). He had only three catches in the game for 37 yards.
Bret Culbertson: Iowa State's 6-foot-6, 185-pound kicker Bret Culbertson entered the game 82 of 82 in extra points in his career. He didn't get to try one against the Longhorns.
