Rumors of Texas QB Colt McCoy's demise have been greatly exaggerated, according to head coach Mack Brown. The sophomore is slated to start against Oklahoma, Brown said Wednesday, amidst speculation that mild concussion-like symptoms would sideline McCoy against the Sooners.
"He's had a good week," Brown said of
Colt McCoy
.
McCoy was evaluated during halftime Saturday against
Kansas State
after his head was slammed to the turf. He played for most of the second half before becoming dizzy and nauseous on the
Texas
sideline following a four-INT outing.
"
John Chiles
is getting 50 percent of the reps right now," Brown said. "Colt gets all the ones with the First Team; John gets all the ones with the Second Team. There's a package where John and Colt go in together."
Chances are, McCoy and Chiles will take more snaps on the field at the same time from that package.
"It puts a tremendous amount of pressure on the defense," Brown continued. "As John continues to grow, we'll expand that package."
Chiles has appeared in the past two ballgames, rushing for 98 yards on 16 carries (6.1 ypc). He has completed just 1-of-6 passes for 17 yards. McCoy is 118-of-186 passing (63.4 percent) for 1,254 yards. He has thrown eight TDs against nine INTS.
"John gets better every week and he's getting a better feel of the passing game," Brown said. "He's obviously already there in the running game. He's done a good job of protecting the ball. It was good that he got some experience throwing the ball downfield last week."
