Justin Tucker: Excited about Future

Justin Tucker (Westlake HS)

It's not a common occurrence to see Mack Brown dole out offers to kickers and punters year after year, but Austin Westlake's Justin Tucker is an exception. He already has a huge leg and has is only going to get better. Tucker talked about his camp visit back in June and where he figures into the Longhorns' future.

"I had a great time. I got to meet a lot of the guys and get better acclimated with some of my future teammates," Justin Tucker said about UT's summer camp. "I already knew Mark Buchanan. He is a local guy, and we actually played against each other during the season. My dad actually works with someone who knows Brock Fitzhenry, so I knew him through that distant relationship. We all hung out at together and have talked quite a bit since then."

Tucker also enjoyed talking and working with several members of the UT coaching staff including Special Teams Coordinator Mike Tolleson.

"I enjoyed getting to work with my position coach and just getting to work with Coach Mac Duff and Coach Tolleson," Tucker said. "It's always good to talk and get to know your coaches. Aside from football, it is always nice to meet people and converse with them."

When Tucker arrives on campus in Austin, there will be several upper classmen above him on the depth chart, but he believes that he may have a chance to play early once he gets the opportunity to prove himself.

"We haven't really talked about that," Tucker replied when asked if he expected to get early playing time. "The coaches have always told me that whoever the best player is will play. That's one of the reasons I committed to Texas. It was not only because it was a dream of mine to go to Texas, but they keep it open competition coming into each spring and summer. I think that is something the other commits like as well."

Tucker has spent most of his summer trying to get ready for his senior season at Westlake. It will be a tough task to get back to the state championship game, but they still have a lot of talent coming back for the 2007 season.

"I have been working out at school just trying to get prepared," Tucker said. "We have been mixing a lot of stuff and moving some guys around. I am probably going to play a little less defense and a little more offense this year. We had a lot of Division I athletes leave last year that anchored our team, so we had to reload. We are going to have a lot of speed this year. The experience might not be there, but the talent definitely is."
