An Inside Texas conversation with Aledo head coach Tim Buchanan on Michael Wilcoxon:

IT: Is Michael (Wilcoxon) very vocal?

Buchanan: Once you get to know Michael, you cannot get Michael to be quiet. He will talk to you a lot more that Kyle Hix) will. I’ve been around Kyle since he was in kindergarten and he hadn’t said 200 words. Michael will say that in one meal. Once you get him to talk to you, he’ll talk a bunch.

IT: Kyle was the first commit for UT, Michael much later in the process, 20th. How much of an impact did Kyle’s commitment have on Michael?

Buchanan: I’m not sure they would have ever found Michael if hadn’t of been for Kyle, because what happened is they (the Longhorns) were recruiting Kyle and (Texas defensive tackles) coach (Mike) Tolleson, when he was here, and I told him, “You need to take a look at thins defensive tackle we got,” and he said, “I seen that kid.” He said, “You know I really do like him. I need to get him down to our camp.” So it was a deal that took a little bit longer because he’s right there on the verge of being tall enough. Now he’s big enough and he’s fast enough. He’s a 4.78 40 kid and he’s strong as a bull. But he’s a little over 6-3, right at 6-4, so he’s on the bubble of being tall enough kid to play. So it took a little bit longer. They came and watched him in spring training his junior year and finally, I guess it was over the summer, early June, late May, when they finally made the offer. The University of Houston had offered him, SMU had offered him, TCU was looking at him pretty strong. A lot of the Big 12 schools were looking at him and didn’t really know who he was because everybody came and they looked at Kyle. And then he had a great spring. Michael had a great spring ball and that’s when everybody started coming out of the woodwork wanting him and sure enough, Texas offers him. Once Texas offered him, though, he was dead set he was going to Texas.

IT: What did he show during spring ball?

Buchanan: Speed and agility. His speed and agility. He’s always been a very powerful kid. He’s got a motor that can run. You know he’d also been starting for us since he was a sophomore, but you know he finally matured enough where he was able to put all those things together. His size, his strength and speed and had a tremendous spring and they (Texas) said, “We’re crazy if we don’t offer this kid.”

IT: Is he more of a nose-tackle, 3-technique?

Buchanan: Yes, exactly. He’s definitely an inside player. Definitely an inside player.

IT: Whenever he came in here, when I saw how he was shaped, he looks like, obviously a little bit younger, but he looks like (Texas nose tackle) Derek Lokey.

Buchanan: Exactly.

IT: Is that the kind of role he was able to provide for y’all, which I guess is one the reasons he didn’t get as much attention because nose tackles don’t exactly put up the biggest statistics?

Buchanan: He was double and triple-teamed all year long. I don’t know if he ever got a single-block.

IT: So he did a good job of changing plays with his presence for y’all this past season?

Buchanan: Definitely a difference-maker on the line-of-scrimmage. He changed the line-of-scrimmage. I mean the line-of-scrimmage was a yard into their backfield. It didn’t matter if he was double-teamed or what, he was definitely…he changed the line-of-scrimmage. I’ll put it that way.

IT: What sort of things can he improve on as he develops at Texas?

Buchanan: The thing that he’s got to improve on is his football savvy. Kyle is extremely football savvy. He knows where the football is at all times. That’s what Michael’s going to have to learn how to do. He’s going to have to learn how to find the football. He’s better than most, but that’s where he can make his improvements. In our district, some of the offensive linemen might be a 220-pound center and a 230-pound guard. Well, he would knock those guys five yards into the backfield and then the ball would then cut behind him and we said, “Michael, we want you to come off with that same drive, but once you knock ‘em back a yard, make sure you find the football.” Then the next play, he’d make a play out by the numbers.

IT: Is there a lot of excitement around here in terms of those two going together to Texas?

Buchanan: Yeah, there’s a lot of excitement. I mean this is my 14th year as a head football coach in Aledo and we’ve got six now that have gone Division I and three of them out of the same class (punter Anson Kelton signed with TCU). We have a bunch of over-achievers and hard-working football players that have come through and played football for us, a tremendous amount of kids who’ve been very successful at the Division III level. This is the first class we’ve had that really had a group of Division I-type players. That’s brought a lot of attention and the fact that two kids are going to the University of Texas, one kid going to TCU, you know, three early-commits. There’s been a lot of excitement. Lot of excitement in Aledo.

IT: Texas has TCU coming up on the schedule.

Buchanan: Yeah. Anson will probably be punting. Out of the three kids, the one going to TCU will probably play in that game, for sure. Anson’s a heck of a punter. He played tight end and defensive end for us, but has an extremely good leg, as far as punter.
