Three high school hoop standouts have signed National Letters of Intent to play basketball next season at The University of Texas, head coach Rick Barnes announced Thursday.

Clint Chapman (Canby, Ore.), Gary Johnson (Houston, Texas) and Alexis Wangmene (San Antonio, Texas) will join the Longhorns for the 2007-08 season.

"This class fills our interior frontcourt needs," Barnes said. "All three come from very good high school programs that consistently won and have received excellent coaching."

"Clint was one of the most improved players on the summer AAU circuit," Barnes said. "He is an inside-outside threat who is strong enough physically to battle inside but can also step out and shoot the ball effectively. Gary is a tenacious player on both ends of the floor. He goes extremely hard to the glass and is just a tough, competitive guy. Lexi is a very physical player who is a solid rebounder and shot-blocker. He's a good player now with a very good upside."

Chapman (6-10, 245), a forward from Canby High School who plays under coach Dane Walker, is ranked as the No. 49 high school prospect in the nation by Scout.com. Chapman averaged 15.6 points, 10.8 rebounds and 4.6 blocks per game during his junior season.

Johnson (6-6, 210), a forward from Aldine High School who plays under coach Ezekiel Smith, is ranked as the No. 26 high school prospect in the country by Scout.com. Johnson averaged 25 points and 12 rebounds per game during his junior season.

Wangmene (6-8, 225), a forward from Blair Academy (Blairstown, N.J.) played under coach Joe Mantegnaat Central Catholic High School in San Antonio during his sophomore and junior seasons. Last year at Central Catholic, he averaged 22.7 points, 15 rebounds and six blocked shots per game.

No. 21 Texas opens the 2006-07 regular season with a home tilt against Alcorn State in the opening round of the 2K Sports College Hoops Classic benefiting Coaches vs. Cancer on Thursday, Nov. 9. Tip is set for 8:30 p.m. at the Erwin Center.
