IT's Coaches Corner Moderator Mike Venable grades the Longhorn performances in the 52-7 win over Rice.

This offense has a bunch of quality football players that somehow only scored seven points last week. The coaches were concerned that Rice's 3-3-5 would throw a ton of stunts at the offense and cause enough confusion to overcome the size/talent level advantage UT enjoyed. The UT OLine decided to remove any cause for worry as they finished quality blocks while giving our two RB's several untouched passages into space against the outmanned Owls. We threw the ball well, we caught the ball well, and the entire bunch blocked very well. The defense added two scores of their own to help lead by example.

Offensive Report Card

You just knew that our defensive troops would show up ready to play after spending all last week with coach Chizik. We brought tremendous pressure from our front four all night to force an outmanned Owl unit into a night where most everything went wrong. We scored a defensive td with a sack and strip and two td's on punt returns but lost one due to a penalty. We accomplished one feat that was a first for me--all four DL made the tackle on the same screen pass. We were relentless in our intensity and reduced our missed tackles with a determined effort to show strong improvement.

Defensive Report Card

The Coaches Corner is available exclusively to InsideTexas.com subscribers. The forum is a place to ask questions of our resident coaches and talk about Xs and Os, schemes, gameplans, offensive and defensive theories, etc. Basically, it is a teaching and learning forum to make us all more knowledgable football fans, both in general and specifically about the Longhorn football team. Venable spent 30 years as the DC and LB coach at five Texas high schools (Lancaster, Duncanville, Pasadena Sam Rayburn, Carrollton Turner, and The Colony) before retiring in 2000. Four of his former players played at UT (Mike Williams, Steve Massey, Jimmy Johnson, and Doug Livingston) and around twenty are currently coaching in Texas high schools.
