IT's Coaches Corner Moderator Mike Venable grades the Longhorn performances in the season-opening 56-7 North Texas win.

The offense had a bunch of fun against UNT. Pancakes, pitching and catching, pulling and target shooting, and getting everyone in the act was the order of the day. The only drawback was the ankle sprain suffered by our starting center--it was brutal the way we manhandled their front. Here are the grades.

Offensive report card--UNT

It was a long afternnon for the Mean Green offense yesterday as the Longhorns unleased superior physical ability and decidely overmatched team speed in dominating the home opener against the visitors from Denton. Lost in the domination is just how well individual players played because the offense was stumped at every turn and they had but one lone drive at the start of the second half where they won any individual battles. Here are the grades.

Defensive report card--UNT

The Coaches Corner is available exclusively to InsideTexas.com subscribers. The forum is a place to ask questions of our resident coaches and talk about Xs and Os, schemes, gameplans, offensive and defensive theories, etc. Basically, it is a teaching and learning forum to make us all more knowledgable football fans, both in general and specifically about the Longhorn football team. Venable spent 30 years as the DC and LB coach at five Texas high schools (Lancaster, Duncanville, Pasadena Sam Rayburn, Carrollton Turner, and The Colony) before retiring in 2000. Four of his former players played at UT (Mike Williams, Steve Massey, Jimmy Johnson, and Doug Livingston) and around twenty are currently coaching in Texas high schools.
