Oklahoma QB Rhett Bomar and sophomore J.D. Quinn, projected to start at guard, have been dismissed from the Sooner football program, according to an ESPN report Tuesday afternoon.

Earlier in the day, head coach Bob Stoops stated that he had permanently dismissed two football players following an investigation initiated by the university. The report revealed that two unspecified players received extra compensation above that to which they were entitled relative to their employment at a Norman, Oklohma business. The school said in a statement that two players received “payment over an extended period of time in excess of the time actually worked.”

According to the ESPN report, Rhett Bomar clocked-in for a 40-hour work-week at a private auto dealership, receiving up to $18,000 when he allegedly only worked five hours per week. ESPN identified the business as Big Red Sports/Imports, which is part of program that supplies vehicles to coaches and athletic department officials.

The two will not be allowed to return to OU at any time in the future, according to university officials.

“I firmly believe that our program is stronger than any individual player and that a championship program cannot compromise its values,” Stoops said in a statement. “We are proud to represent a university with the highest possible principles.”

Bomar started the final games of his RS-freshman season. Quinn logged four starts at right guard in 2005.

Possible replacements at QB include WR Paul Thompson, who started the season behind center in the home-opening loss to TCU. He was moved to WR the following week and was 11-of-26 for 109 yards and an INT in 2005. The depth chart includes JC transfer Joey Haizle (Golden West Community College) and true freshman recruit Sam Bradford. Ironically, Hays McEachern (son of former Texas QB Randy McEachern who came off the bench in 1977 and rallied Texas to 13-6 win) could now figure into the rotation. Hays is a walk-on and is projected as the starting holder this season.
