Baseball: Texas Top National Seed

Posted May 31, 2004

For Texas, the road to Omaha starts, and finishes, in Austin. UT landed the top overall national seed in the NCAA Baseball Tournament, ensuring both a regional and, with a regional win, a super regional at the Disch.

South Carolina is the No. 2 overall seed, followed by Miami, Georgia Tech, Stanford, Rice, Arizona State and Arkansas.

To advance to the super regional round, the Horns will have to get through its regional field of Oral Roberts (48-9), TCU (38-24) and Youngstown State (22-30). Texas (50-13) will open Friday, June 4 with the fourth-seeded Penguins, winners of the Horizon League Tournament. The second-seed Golden Eagles, winners of the Mid-Continent Conference Tournament title, will face the third-seed Horned Frogs, winners of the Conference USA Tournament title in the opening round of the double elimination regional.

The winner of the Austin regional will take on the winner of the Charlottesville regional. That field consists of No. 1 seed Virginia, No. 2 seed Vanderbilt, No. 3 seed George Mason and No. 4 seed Princeton.

Six Big 12 teams made the field. Tourney champ Oklahoma State is the No. 2 seed in Florida State's Tallahassee regional. Regular season No. 2 Oklahoma is a regional host, but a No. 2 seed behind No. 1 Florida in Oklahoma City. Texas A&M will travel just down the road as the No. 2 seed in the Rice regional in Houston. Texas Tech is the No. 2 seed in Georgia Tech's Atlanta regional. With its strong finish, Missouri earned an at-large bid and a No. 3 seed in Arkansas' Fayetteville regional.
