Texas Picked No. 15 in Coaches Poll

Texas Picked No. 15 in Coaches Poll

Just a few weeks ago, Texas was picked to finish fourth in the Big 12. On Thursday, in the season's first USA Today Coaches' Poll, the Longhorns were picked 15th, the second-highest spot for Big 12 teams.

The voting reflected the tight nature of this season's Big 12. Oklahoma State was the first Big 12 team at No. 14, with Texas following one spot below at No. 15 and Oklahoma just one spot below Texas at No. 16. The fourth and final Big 12 team in the Coaches' Poll, TCU, came in at No. 20, not far off the three-team cluster.

Kansas State received the most votes of any team that didn't make the top 25, while Baylor was fourth among the "others receiving votes" teams. No other Big 12 teams earned any votes, though two of Texas's three non-conference opponents, Ole Miss and BYU, also received votes.

Alabama won the 2012-2013 BCS National Championship and picked up 58 of the available 62 first-place votes. Ohio State went 12-0 last year, but was ineligible to play in the postseason as part of a bowl ban. That ban is now over, and the Buckeyes were selected second in the poll with three of the four remaining first-place votes. Oregon, Stanford and Georgia rounded out the top five, with No. 6 Texas A&M receiving the last first-place vote.

The Longhorns return 19 offensive and defensive starters from a team that went 9-4 last season, winning the Alamo Bowl over Oregon State. That team finished the season ranked No. 18 in the final Coaches' Poll of the year.
