The challenge, which starts in 2013-2014, will feature 10 games each season, with each Big 12 team taking part in one SEC contest (as part of the challenge) per year.
“The Big 12 is excited to enter into another partnership with the SEC,” said Big 12 Commissioner Bob Bowlsby. “It will add more quality opponents to our schools’ annually strong non-conference schedules and provide an additional avenue to showcase some outstanding intersectional matchups.”
Most of the games are scheduled for Dec. 2-6, with three exceptions because of scheduling issues. In future seasons, both leagues will work with ESPN to schedule all games across consecutive games.
This is the first challenge for Big 12 men's basketball since the Big 12/Pac-10 challenge from 2007-2010. The Big 12 won 28 of those 48 games, with Texas going 3-1 over those contests.
Vanderbilt went 16-17 last year, including an 8-10 mark in SEC play. The Commodores — who, like the Longhorns, didn't have any seniors a year ago — finished with a KenPom rank of 85th, 13 spots ahead of the Longhorns (16-18, 7-11 Big 12).
Tip times and television information for those games will be announced at a later date.
