Cowboys Arrive, Practice For First Time

DALLAS -- The Oklahoma State Cowboys arrived and got to work with meetings Thursday with their first practice in Dallas for the upcoming Heart of Dallas Bowl next Tuesday in the Cotton Bowl against Big 10 foe Purdue. All of the Cowboys arrived with only one humorous mishap.

One player arrived at the airport and he told the cab driver he wanted to go to The Omni, the hotel in Dallas where the team is staying. But there also is an Omni in Fort Worth. Guess where the cab went? The player made it in time for the two-hour, 20-minute practice.

With temperatures in the 40s, coach Mike Gundy's squad took the field Thursday afternoon at Highlander Stadium on the campus of Highland Park High School, the alma mater of the likes of Doak Walker, Bobby Layne and Matthew Stafford.

Gundy was pleased with the effort and focus of his squad, which had not practiced since last Sunday.

"Practice went really well; the players were excited and had a nice two-hour workout," Gundy said. "Everybody traveled safely, and it's good to get back on the field and get after it.

"This is an exciting time. The first two or three days of a bowl game are always a lot of fun for the players, but they practiced well. They understand the importance of focusing in for the two hours of practice and then the rest of the day they can have a good time."

With no team bowl activities Thursday night and Purdue not arriving until Friday, the Cowboys have a free night with a relaxed curfew. Practice is back at Highland Park High School on Friday, and so is a meeting with the media for Gundy and select offensive players.
