Video: VMI Postgame

Bob Huggins

The box score would indicate West Virginia had an easy time of things in its home-opener, a 94-69 win over VMI on Wednesday night. But coach Bob Huggins said his team still didn't play well for an entire 40 minutes.

Mountaineer players took one of Huggins' chief messages to heart in the win over the Keydets. The coach has often said a team doesn't have to shoot well to score, and guard Juwan Staten said the team used its defense to kick-start its offense.

There are still strides to be made on defense, according to guard Gary Browne, who also discussed the progress of teammate Keaton Miles.

For his part, Miles said his comfort this season is the result of experience. As a freshman, he simply wasn't asked to pull the trigger too often as a shooter. Now, he is more comfortable looking for his own offense.

On a scale of 1 to 10, Aaric Murray said his quality of play is at about a "6" as things currently stand. It will take time to get comfortable with the team's motion offense -- and to get over the jitters he still feels early in the season.
