Two of the highest powered passing attacks face on in Dallas this week. How do they match up…
Texas Tech Game Preview Part 1
The Baylor Bears travel north up I-35 to Cowboy stadium for their annual game against the Texas Tech Red Raiders. The game features two of the best passing attacks in America. However, these two teams could not be more different in terms of how they are playing right now. -Seth Doege – Senior Quarterback Some things change, while others stay the same. Though Tommy Tuberville is the new man in charge for Tech, they still have a pass heavy offensive attack, throwing the ball 60% of their offensive plays. Leading that attack is Seth Doege, a very accurate quarterback that knows how to get the ball to the open receiver. Doege has a quick release that works well in the Tech offense. Since the calendar flipped to November though, Doege has not been as sharp. Split G Att Comp Pct. You can also see the staggering difference between his performance in wins and losses. They have been much less explosive in their losses, and actually had fewer yards per game passing in those games. -Kenny Williams – Sophomore Running Back The second year tailback for the Red Raiders has been a big play guy for the Red Raiders. He only had more than 15 carries in one game this year (18 in their loss to Texas), but he averages 5.6 yards per carry, and has the 8th most rushing yards in the Big 12. The Red Raiders are a passing team though, with a staggering 73% of their yards coming through the air. Williams is involved a bit in the passing attack, as he has 13 receptions on the year. Williams is an explosive runner with good speed and agility, but great size and strength for the position. He is a straight-line runner who was a highly recruited player out of high school. -Cody Davis – Senior Safety Davis is the Red Raiders top tackler and play maker for the Red Raider defense. He is a well-built safety with good coverage skills. He is a four year starter for Tech, who is usually all over the field. They line him up closer to the line of scrimmage, similar to Ahmad Dixon for the Bears, and reminds me of a bigger version of Sam Holl. He is not the hitter that Holl is, but he is better in coverage. Davis is a tackling machine though, and someone the Bears have to block to have success in the running game. -D.J. Johnson – Senior Safety Johnson is the other senior safety for the Bears. The Red Raiders have one of the better safety duos in the Big 12, and Johnson is a good match for what Davis brings to the table. He is less experienced than Davis though, as this is just his third year starting in Lubbock. They have been playing together for a while now, and know how to play off of each other. Johnson is a smaller safety, who is very good in coverage. You can expect him to be matched up with the inside receivers quite a bit, along with the tight ends for the Bears. -Eric Ward and Darrin Moore – Junior Wide Receivers The junior receivers have combined for 134 receptions, 1631 yards and 21 touchdowns. They are a very good duo at the receiver spot and the Raiders do a good job of using them both in a variety of ways. Ward is more of the big play guy, while Moore is involved in the shorter passing game. Moore has excellent size of the position, standing 6-4, 216 pounds. He is a big receiver that is good at using his size to beat smaller cornerbacks. Ward is only 6-0, but he has good speed and athletic ability. While not on the same level as the West Virginia duo Austin and Bailey, Ward and Moore bring great ability to the Red Raider passing game.
