King Enrolls at Texas

The graduate school immediate eligibility rule has given teams an opportunity to land a proven commodity and upgrade its roster at a need spot immediately. This week, Texas landed its first such player, a second-team All-ACC punter who could immediately upgrade a need spot.

Former Duke punter Alex King has enrolled in graduate school at Texas, and will complete his final season of eligibility with the Longhorns after graduating from Duke with a degree in history.

"The coaches, facilities, fans, and strong football tradition first attracted me, but in such a short time period the relationships between myself and the coaches and staff at UT are what made me feel most comfortable with changing schools for my final year," King said. "There is so much talent at UT, and I was also impressed with the humility of many of this year’s incoming freshmen when I met them. I am excited to be a part of this team."

King played in 24 games at Duke, punting 111 times for 4,593 yards and a 41.38 average that is the fourth-best average in Duke history. He also made the team's top-10 list in single-season average when he averaged 42.08 yards per punt last year, earning second-team All-ACC honors. He ranked third in the ACC in punting, but perhaps more impressively, he had 17 punts, or 34 percent, downed inside the 20. Seven of his punts went more than 50 yards.

For reference, in 2011, Justin Tucker averaged 39.2 yards per punt, and despite punting 13 more times, had two fewer punts downed inside the 20 (23.8 percent), while kicking five punts longer than 50 yards.

In 2010, King averaged 41.13 yards per punt.

A native of Winston-Salem, N.C., King attended Forsyth Country Day School before spending a post-graduate year at Phillips Exeter Academy in Exeter, N.H. While at Exeter, he was a first-team All-New England Class A honoree at both quarterback and punter. A good all-around athlete, King was an all-state quarterback as a senior at Forsyth, passing for 1,400 yards and 21 touchdowns while also playing safety. He was a starting guard on the basketball team as well.
