State Scouting Report: Colin LaGasse

Colin LaGasse capped a strong senior season with a great performance in the state championship game.

LaGasse is one of those players who is interesting to project to the next level. He doesn't have great size or speed, but he's thickly built and always seems a bit faster than the guy chasing him. He fits the definition of the word "athlete", a player who is capable of filling a roster hole at several different positions.

So which position will it be? LaGasse said the SMU staff likes him as an offensive athlete, and it isn't difficult to project him as a slot receiver who can get open and make the big third-down catch. And with his quick feet and the tough running ability he displayed at times at Lake Travis, he could also be a running back, especially one who catches passes out of the backfield.

In a state game filled with offensive skill position talent, LaGasse had arguably the top game, making big play after big play. And he could also potentially project as an undersized safety. He isn't afraid to bring his pads into contact, and his athleticism and ball skills are nice fits for the position.

In short, LaGasse is an intriguing pickup for SMU, a player who might not wow you with the measurables, but should wow in terms of production value. As a coach once told me: there's always a market for guys who get open and catch the ball.
