Six Horns Taken On First Day Of MLB Draft

Posted Jun 4, 2003

Six members of the NCAA Austin Regional and Big 12 Tournament champion Texas baseball team were selected during the first full day of the 2003 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft on Tuesday.

Senior shortstop Omar Quintanilla was the first Longhorn named when the Oakland Athletics made him their first round pick and the No. 33 pick overall in the 20-round marathon. Two rounds later, the A’s also took teammate Dustin Majewski. Second baseman Tim Moss was the third-round choice of the Philadelphia Phillies.

The Baltimore Orioles chose outfielder Eric Sultemeier in the sixth round while pitcher Josh Smith was picked up by the New York Yankees in the eighth. Finally, the Arizona Diamondbacks picked up pitcher Danny Muegge in the 19th round.

Quintanilla currently has a .355 batting average in 256 plate appearances. His 91 hits helped generate 68 RBI. A constant at shortstop in '03, the senior has registered just 10 errors in 64 starts and a .963 fielding percentage.

Meanwhile, nobody in the Big 12 boasts Majewski’s bat. The USA Today All-American and NCAA Austin Regional MVP now has a .395 batting average. Through Sunday, the outfielder has tallied 81 RBI on 101 hits with an on-base percentage of .448.

Moss is batting .320 on the season including 31 RBI on 81 hits. He has a .951 fielding percentage. Sultemeier, one of the most improved batters in the Texas lineup this season, was good for 50 RBI on 68 hits. He now has a .318 batting average.

Smith has a 2-0 record and a 3.82 ERA in 17 appearances. He has started three games and has registered 35.1 innings of work. Muegge has a 6-6 mark and a 4.89 ERA. He is credited with 15 starts, 15 appearances and 77 innings pitched.

Each player has requested to discuss his selection in the draft and future plans at a later time, according to Longhorn baseball officials.

In addition, Longhorn signee John Danks (a highly coveted southpaw pitcher out of Round Rock High) is expected to take the money and run after the Texas Rangers made him their first round pick, No. 9 overall.

The Longhorns face No. 1 Florida State during the NCAA Super Regional Tournament in Tallahassee, Fla., with first pitch slated for 7:05 p.m. (EST) Saturday.
