A 2012 safety target received a visit from Texas defensive backs coach Duane Akina Friday. One day later, he has word of a Longhorn offer and a visit set up to the 40 Acres. Read more inside!

"It was pretty cool," said Adrian Colbert, Mineral Wells safety. "I didn't really expect this to happen.

"I met (Coach Akina) before the game and he just told me that it was nice to finally meet me," Colbert said. "He said he enjoyed watching me on film, and that he felt like he had to see me in person. He wished me good luck."

That luck seemed to hold as long as Akina was in the stadium. With Akina looking on, Colbert scored three long touchdowns in the first half. He returned a kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown, scored on an 81-yard reception and rushed for a 41-yard score as Mineral Wells went into halftime down 29-28 to Decatur. Akina then said his goodbyes to Colbert as the safety was walking into the locker room.

He told me I was having a great game and to keep it up in the second half," Colbert said. "He said he would get into contact with me within the next week."

Mineral Wells struggled to keep it up in the effort in the second half. With Colbert not touching the ball the rest of the game, Decatur went on to have a huge half and won going away.

"We played really poorly," Colbert said. "That was our worst half of the year."

But if Colbert had a rough ending to his Friday night, his Saturday started off pretty well. Texas track coach Mario Sategna called Colbert Saturday morning and set him up with Akina's phone number.

"I called Coach Akina, and he said that I exceeded his expectations," Colbert said. "He said they would be sending me an offer later this week."

Akina then handed the phone over to Texas coach Mack Brown, who told Colbert that he was impressed with his film and "couldn't wait to see me" in person, Colbert said.

Colbert admitted that the offer clouded up his recruiting picture just two to three weeks after he pulled the commitment trigger for Baylor.

"I'm going to have to think about it a lot more," Colbert said. "Now I have more than one option. I have three very great schools to choose from. I like Texas a lot. If I didn't have this kind of success in football this year, I was going to go to Texas to run track.

"I like everything about Texas," Colbert said. "It's a great environment with great people and awesome fans."

TCU is the other school that Colbert is considering.

Colbert is the defending state champion in the 400-meter dash after running a 48.23-second time, one that he said he could top if running against prime competition. He has also run a 21.3-second 200-meter dash. He now plans to do both football and track in college.

And he now has the option to do both at Texas. Colbert said he already set up his official visit date for Texas — Dec. 9 — and is in the process of setting up visits to Baylor and TCU. He said the Baylor visit would likely come in late November, early December.

"More than likely, what sets a school apart for me is going to be the education factor," Colbert said. "After all, that's going to be what is going to get me where I want to be in life."
