Street wins his sixth of the season

J.P. Howell and Huston Street combined to shutout Texas A&M as No. 5 Texas (38-15, 19-7 Big 12) rebounded from Friday’s loss with a sweet 3-0 victory over No. 9 Texas A&M (40-15, 18-8 Big 12) in front of a season-high 7,148 at Disch-Falk Field, Saturday. With one game remaining, Texas tied Nebraska for first place in the Big 12 standings after the Huskers' 7-1 loss to Baylor earlier in the day.

Street picked up his sixth win of the season (and has more saves than God) after Texas scored three runs with two outs between the seventh and eighth innings. Eric Sultemeier paced the Texas offense with a 2-for-4 outing, while five other Horns each collected one hit. The Aggies also managed seven hits but could not plate a base runner.

From the outset, the starting pitchers (TAMU’s Kyle Parcus and Howell for Texas) were locked in a pitcher's duel, limiting each squad to a total of one hit over the first four frames. The Aggies threatened in both the fifth and sixth by tallying two hits in each inning, but were denied when a pair of runners were caught stealing in the fifth and when then left the bases loaded in the sixth. In the sixth, Street came on in relief with two outs and the bases juiced and forced a pop up to end the frame.

The Longhorns claimed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the seventh as Sultemeier led off with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, stole third and came home on Stephen Ripper’s two-out, RBI-single. Texas added two more two-out runs with an RBI-single from Dustin Majewski and a run-scoring single from Taylor Teagarden to build a 3-0 lead.

Over the final 3-1/3 innings Street allowed only two hits while striking out three.

The rubber match of the three-game series, and a conference title, is at stake when the two teams square off at 1 p.m., Sunday, at the Disch.
