No. 9 Texas Rallies For 6-5 Win Against Pan Am

Posted Apr 23, 2003

These Tuesday baseball games are like getting in a fight with the toughest girl in your high school: there’s an outside chance you can lose but it’s no big deal if you win. Unless, perhaps, you are No. 9 Texas (32-13) and overcome a five-run deficit against UT-Pan American (19-24) to come out on top, 6-5, at Disch-Falk Field Tuesday.

UTPA out-hit Texas 12-10, both teams tallied two errors, but the Horns scored six unanswered runs to clinch the contest when Joe Ferin stole third and came home on a throwing error in the bottom of the ninth. Reliever Brantley Jordan was credited with the win.

A walk, a wild pitch and Marco Garza’s RBI-single in the top of the third gave the visitor’s a 1-0 lead. Matt Sisk’s homer in the fourth, combined with Jerome McCoy’s run-scoring base hit, upped the Broncs’ lead to 3-0. UTPA plated two more runs in the fifth as three base hits, along with a UT error and a sacrifice fly, gave the Broncs a 5-0 cushion.

The Longhorns finally scored a pair of runs on four hits in the bottom of the fifth on the strength of consecutive RBI singles from J.D. Reininger and Stephen Ripper. Trailing 5-2, Tim Moss led off the eighth with a walk followed by Eric Sultemeier’s single. After Omar Quintanilla doubled home a run, Dustin Majewski plated another score with a ground out and Taylor Teagarden tied the game at 5-5 with a sacrifice fly to right field.

The Broncs loaded the bases in the ninth with one out, but Texas turned a 6-4-3 double play to end the threat.

In the bottom of the frame, Ferin was hit by a pitch before advancing to second on a balk. After Ferin stole third, catcher Matt Eichel's throw sailed into left field. Ferin came home on the throwing error to score the winning run.

Texas hosts woeful Kansas State this weekend in a three-game conference series with first pitch slated for 6:30 p.m., Friday at the Disch.
