Junior lefthander Eugene Espineli picked up the win for Texas after pitching two hitless innings in relief of starter Josh Smith, who tossed a career-tying four innings while fanning three.
Now, the Horns travel to No. 11 Nebraska for the most critical three-game weekend series so far in Big 12 play. Texas holds a one-game lead over the 25-9 Huskers (11-4 Big 12). Saturdays game is slated for a 4 p.m. (CST) telecast on the new CSTV network.
Texas jumped to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second thanks to a pair of doubles from Dustin Majewski and Curtis Thigpen, combined with a throwing error and three singles from Scott Dodge, Joe Ferin and Stephen Ripper.
UTSA managed a run in the top of the fourth as Cory Horton tripled and then scored on a Philip Gentry groundout.
The Horns padded their advantage in the bottom of the fourth by scoring two runs on three hits, including J.D. Reiningers RBI-double and Eric Sultemeiers RBI-single.
Ripper singled in the bottom of the sixth while Sultemeier reached on a fielder's choice. Both scored when Sultemeier attempted to steal second and the throw to the base sailed into the outfield. Texas now led 7-1.
Robbie Johns solo shot in the top of the seventh added a run for the visitors. But that only seemed to incite the Texas offense. UT batters exploded in the home half of the frame with seven runs on six hits, including RBI-doubles from both Thigpen and Sultemeier.
Relievers Sam LeCure and J. Brent Cox combined to hold UTSA scoreless following the seventh inning stretch.
