Thompson vs Shipley

When the Texas AP Class 3A rankings came out in August, Texas linebacker commitment Kendall Thompson was furious. Now he gets a chance to do something about it.

When the Texas AP Class 3A rankings came out in August, Texas linebacker commitment Kendall Thompson was furious.

For the second straight year, Carthage was coming off a state championship, but wasn't selected the No. 1 team in the state.

That honor went to Jaxon Shipley and Brownwood.

"It motivates us a lot. Every year they do it," said Thompson in August. "I'm not even sure how it happens."

Carthage ended up losing two games early in the season due to injury, while Brownwood ran the table. Voters now have the feeling the ranking was justified, but Thompson will try to prove Carthage is the better team later tonight. The two will meet in the semifinal round of the Texas 3A Division II playoffs.

"We are pumped to play them. It's going to be fun. We are playing really solid right now. We are all clicking together and peaking at the right time," said Thompson.

While it's unlikely the two should be matched-up on the field, it will be fun to see if Carthage who prides themselves on defense can shut down Brownwood who has a big play offense.

Thompson is averaging nine tackles a game this year, he also has four interceptions over the middle.

Shipley is Brownwood's biggest weapon. No corner has been able to contain him this season and he becomes even more of a weapon if teams are punting to him.

The Brownwood/Carthage winner advances to face either Coldspring/Oakhurst (13-1) or Wimberley (14-0) in the state finals. Wimberley eliminated Brownwood from the playoffs last year.
